Class Description
“The challenge in the age of digital information is not getting information, but knowing what to do with it. What is important today is knowing how to identify the best, most trustworthy information, analyze it, organize it, and put it to use. That’s what writing a research paper is all about. Accumulating, evaluating, organizing, and presenting information are critical skills in today’s world. Employers need people who know how to handle information, how to make sense of it. That’s what research papers can teach us.” (What Is a Research Paper?) This class will guide students through the research and writing process. By the end of the semester, they will have written a substantial, persuasive research paper, with academic sources and citations, AND completed an accompanying digital project. Digital project options will include presentations like Powerpoint or Goggle Slides, or creating a Youtube video. It is important that your child commit to doing homework each week, as the learning will be cumulative from week to week. Students should expect to spend at least 1-2 hours per week on research and writing for this academic high school class. Class assignments will be posted to Google Classroom, and grades will be given. This class is appropriate for students who have experience writing essays. It could fill two roles: as a high school "capstone" project or as a college-prep writing class.
