Class Description
Stellar Minds
Gr 6-9
In this semester, we will introduce advanced scientific concepts, at a middle school level.
The types of science topics planned for this semester* are:
Quantum Physics,
Rocket Science,
General Relativity,
Newtonian Physics,
Astrophysics,
Organic Chemistry,
Probability,
Optical Physics,
Artificial Intelligence,
Biochemistry,
Data Science,
Engineering,
Game Theory
Each week's class will consist of:
1. An introduction to the week's scientific concept
2. Hands-on activities and experiments, demonstrating the concept of the week
3. Optional at home follow-up activities, provided on Google Classroom
We will be introducing the concepts each week using the Advanced Sciences "for Babies" board book series. See on Amazon here: https://shorturl.at/qIIKI Even though these books are called "for babies," they actually do a really good job of introducing complex topics in a simple and understandable way.
The rest of the class will be spent on hands-on activities and/or experiments that help to reinforce the week's concepts. For example, for General Relativity week, we'd talk about mass, then mass warping space, then black holes. We'll have activities like using a parachute and different weights of balls to demonstrate mass and the warping of space.
This is a middle school level supplemental science class. It will not have assigned homework each week, however there will be one at-home project assigned that will be due before the semester showcase. The class is geared toward middle school or lower high school students. If parents would like to use this as the basis for a for-credit class, they will need to assign additional readings/videos/assignments at home.
I will set up a Google Classroom for the class and will post links for additional learning each week, for parents to use for expansion activities, or for students to continue learning about a concept that has captured their interest.
*These are the planned subjects for this semester, but may change some as I complete my lesson planning. A syllabus with exact topics and dates will be provided at Meet the Teacher.
