Class Description
Travel through the fascinating history of Europe and discover what daily life was like for people from every level of society. In this interactive class, students will explore the worlds of royalty, nobles, merchants, craftsmen, servants, and peasants while learning how social classes shaped European life for centuries. From magnificent castles and elegant royal courts to crowded towns and hardworking villages, students will compare how different people lived, worked, dressed, ate, learned, and entertained themselves throughout history.
Students will journey through a variety of European time periods and regions, exploring topics such as manor life, royal traditions, marketplaces, festivals, fashion, food, jobs, and family life. They will also learn how geography, trade, culture, and historical events influenced the structure of society across Europe, such as war and the Titanic.
Through hands-on projects, games, role-playing activities, art, storytelling, and interactive lessons, students will experience history and the cultural in an engaging and memorable way. Activities and topics may include designing luxury estates or modern apartments, homes and lifestyles of different social classes, participating in travel and shopping simulations, exploring famous European traditions and celebrations, and examining fashion, transportation, entertainment, and daily life across modern European society.
This class encourages curiosity, historical thinking, creativity, and cultural understanding while helping students see how ordinary people and powerful rulers together shaped European history and daily life.

What class supplies do parents need to provide?
Parents may need to provide materials for individual weeks, such as snacks for a tea or materials for class projects or presentations. We may be searching for period style clothes from time to time.

While we will discuss differences in wealth, social status, and opportunities during these time periods, topics will be presented in an age-appropriate manner and focused on helping students understand how people lived and how society changed over time.
No prior knowledge of European history is required. Students should come prepared to participate in discussions, activities, and occasional simple at-home reflection or research opportunities. Curiosity and a willingness to learn about life in the past are all that is needed!
To help bring history to life, lessons may occasionally reference scenes, settings, or themes from historical dramas such as Downton Abbey and other period shows. These references will be used solely to illustrate historical lifestyles, social customs, homes, clothing, and daily life, and students are not expected to have watched or be familiar with any of these programs.
