Class Description
Step into the hidden world of some of the planet’s most unusual and little-known creatures! In this exciting class, students will explore rare, fascinating, and mysterious animals from around the world — from glowing deep-sea creatures and secretive rainforest animals to strange mammals, birds, reptiles, and ocean giants. Students will also discover legendary and mythical creatures from cultures around the world and compare the myths to real animals that may have inspired them. From dragons and sea serpents to phoenixes and cryptids, we will explore how stories, folklore, and mysteries connect to the natural world. Each week, students will learn where these creatures live or are said to live, how real animals survive in extreme environments, what makes certain creatures mysterious, and why some animals remain difficult for scientists to study. Topics may include animal adaptations, habitats, camouflage, survival skills, folklore, exploration, and conservation through engaging discussions, games, activities, maps, and creative projects. Perfect for animal lovers and curious learners, this class encourages imagination, exploration, and a deeper appreciation for both the incredible diversity of life on Earth and the legends humans have created throughout history.

Throughout the semester, students will learn about both real animals and legendary creatures from folklore, such as dragons, sea serpents, Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster. These topics will be explored from a cultural, historical, and storytelling perspective while encouraging curiosity and critical thinking. I will strive to keep all discussions age-appropriate and present these topics as folklore, legends, and mysteries rather than factual animals. We may also explore how real animals and natural events may have inspired these stories. The goal is to foster imagination, learning, and a love of discovery.
